Adami has left Hamilton’s race engineer role

According to reports from Maranello, Riccardo Adami will no longer serve as Lewis Hamilton’s race engineer from 2026 onward.

Late on Thursday night, Ferrari’s press office released a statement confirming that the Italian specialist has moved to a different role, while the name of the seven-time world champion’s new race engineer will be announced at a later date.

Ferrari stated that Riccardo Adami has taken up a position within the Ferrari Driver Academy. He will serve as Head of the Driver Academy and the TPC Program (Testing of a Previous Car).

His extensive trackside experience and expert knowledge of Formula 1 have contributed to the development of future talents and helped strengthen a culture of high performance within the program. Ferrari thanked Riccardo for his dedication and contributions during his time on the track and wished him success in his new role.

The team will announce details regarding the appointment of the new race engineer for the No. 44 car in due course.

Before working with Lewis Hamilton, Riccardo Adami served as race engineer at Ferrari for Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz. However, during last season, there were occasional misunderstandings in radio communications with Lewis, which led to rumors of tension between driver and engineer, despite Hamilton repeatedly denying such claims.

The identity of Lewis’s next race engineer is now a topic of interest, so let us take a look at all of his race engineers to date.

Phil Prew (2007–2009)

Phil was Lewis’s first race engineer. During his first three years at McLaren, Lewis competed in 52 races with Prew, achieving 17 pole positions, 11 victories, 27 podium finishes, and 3 fastest laps. He celebrated his first world title in 2008 with Phil Prew.

Andy Latham (2010–2012)

The period with Andy was more difficult compared to the previous three years. Lewis worked with him for 58 races, starting from pole six times, winning nine races, securing 21 podiums, and setting eight fastest laps. No championship titles were won during this period.

Mark Temple (2012)

In 2012, Andy Latham stepped away from his role for several races due to personal reasons and was replaced by Lewis’s performance engineer, Mark Temple. As Andy did not return before the end of the season, Temple supported Lewis until his final race with McLaren. During seven races together, they achieved three pole positions, one victory, one podium, and one fastest lap.

Peter Bonnington (2013–2024)

Lewis’s longest and most successful partnership was with Peter “Bono” Bonnington, widely regarded as the most successful driver–race engineer pairing in Formula 1 history. Over 12 consecutive seasons and 244 races, Bono helped Lewis secure 78 pole positions, 83 victories, 151 podiums, 55 fastest laps, and, most importantly, six world titles. Bono missed only two races during this period — the 2019 Mexican Grand Prix and the 2022 Austrian Grand Prix — both due to health reasons, with Marcus Dudley stepping in as his replacement. Lewis finished first and third in those races respectively.

Riccardo Adami (2025)

This partnership turned out to be Hamilton’s least successful. Across 24 races, the pair managed only one fastest lap as their best result and did not achieve a single pole position, victory, or podium together, except for the sprint race win in China.
