How many races were held in each month?

The Australian Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2026 season, will take place on 8 March and will be the 1 150th race in Formula 1 history, as well as the 85th to occur in March.

In 1965 and 1968, South Africa hosted the earliest races in Formula 1 history on the first day of the year. The latest race ever held within a calendar year took place on 29 December 1962, also in South Africa. The Prince George Circuit hosted all three of these races.

Argentina primarily hosted most of the races held in January, which date back to the championship’s early decades. Teams usually competed in these events with cars from the previous season, while new cars were prepared for later races held in the spring.

More than half of all Formula 1 races in history—611 Grands Prix—have been held between May and August. A total of 201 races took place between January and April, while 337 were held between September and December.

Among the months, July leads the way with 186 races. February is the last with just three races, two of which were held in Brazil (1973 and 1979) and one in Argentina (1960).

The nine races held in Baku have been spread across three different months. The Baku City Circuit hosted races four times in June (2016, 2017, 2021, 2022), three times in April (2018, 2019, 2023), and twice in September (2024, 2025).
